When spring awakens fur and feather,
A hidden rhythm stirs the air;
Across the fields, through changing weather,
Life begins its ancient search for care.
The cat beneath the silver moonlight
Calls softly through the quiet street;
Restless paws pursue the night,
Drawn by a longing deep and sweet.
The faithful dog lifts nose to breezes,
Following signs we cannot know;
An ageless instinct guides and teases,
Whispering where the heart should go.
In forests, antlers meet like thunder;
Proud rivals struggle for the right
To pass their strength and spirit onward
Before they vanish into night.
Bright-plumed birds rehearse their dances,
Frogs sing boldly after rain;
Every creature takes its chances,
Risking loss to love again.
Some send perfumes through the flowers,
Some cross oceans, hills, and streams;
Some wait through the darkest hours,
Led by nature and their dreams.
And we, though dressed in gentler manners,
Still feel that ancient inner flame;
We trade the battles and the banners
For a smile, a touch, a name.
In youth, love rushes like a river,
Wild with promise, swift and new;
A glance can make the whole world quiver,
And every distant hope seem true.
With passing years, its pace grows slower,
Yet its roots reach deeper ground;
Love becomes the patient grower
Of trust wherever trust is found.
It lives in laughter shared each morning,
in hands that meet through grief and strain,
in steady care that asks no praise,
and choosing one another again.
The body’s seasons rise and alter;
beauty changes, passion bends.
But love need neither fade nor falter
when desire ripens into friendship.
For young and old, for every being,
Love takes forms no rule can bind;
It is the longing to be seen
And the courage to be kind.
So through the years, in fur or feather,
In human hearts both fierce and true,
Life keeps drawing us together—
And love keeps making all things new.
