17. Who Gave Me The Name Lay?<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Once I had a chance to ask my Dad (July 1994)
<\/span><\/span>Why did you give me this funny name?
<\/span>No, we did not give you this name,
<\/span>Your nursing woman gave you the name.<\/span><\/p>\n

We were so busy working day and night,
<\/span><\/span>Cang, K\u00fd, L\u00fd, Tr\u00ed, To\u00e0n, Xu\u00e2n, L\u1ea1c, H\u1ed3ng
<\/span>Eight names were for eight of you,
<\/span>Starting from the oldest to the youngest.<\/span><\/p>\n

My father was very skillful man:
<\/span><\/span>A soccer player, a farmer, but cooking was his best.
<\/span>He even knew how to build houses,
<\/span>Running electricity, carpentry, brick laying, all of that.<\/span><\/p>\n

Like father like son, so sensitive I was.
<\/span><\/span>My father got <\/span><\/span>his feelings hurt easily.
<\/span><\/span>Whenever mt father was mad at my mother,
<\/span>He stayed out until my mother begged him home.<\/span><\/p>\n

We children had never seen our father angry;
<\/span><\/span>He never scolded or whipped any children.
<\/span>Any one of us kids who wanted to have a whip in the butt,
<\/span>My mother would gladly give us a few lashes to remember.<\/span><\/p>\n

After I became a U.S. citizen on May 1, 1981,
<\/span><\/span>I changed my name to Jim Tam Hoang Huynh.
<\/span>All my childhood friends only know me as Lay
<\/span>Jim is for Americans to get used to my new name, I hope.<\/span><\/p>\n

Because of Li\u00ean laughing at my name once,
<\/span><\/span>And it’s still uncomfortable for me to this day.
<\/span>I prefer to introduce my American name to people,
<\/span>The same man with three different names to different people.<\/span><\/p>\n

U.S. citizenship at the time was very strictly controlled,
<\/span><\/span>There had to be two U.S. citizens to recommend me.
<\/span>Pastor Jim and Fred Spangler were more than helpful,
<\/span>Fred said I was pretty bad with his tongue-in-cheek remarks.
