16. One More Vietnamese Family Arriving in Latrobe, PA<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

I went along with the Tranquillas to Pittsburgh Airport
<\/span><\/span>To pick up another Vietnamese family of four.
<\/span>The family had just arrived from a refugee camp in Thailand.
<\/span>A couple with their young son, and Li\u00ean was his sister,<\/span><\/p>\n

The couple Tr\u1ecdng Nguy\u1ec5n’s son was about five years old.
<\/span><\/span>Li\u00ean was a freshly minted medical doctor from Vietnam.
<\/span>Since there were only two of us, both single,
<\/span>Naturally we were close and started dating.<\/span><\/p>\n

My schooling was no longer my priority,
<\/span><\/span>I had to find a job quickly to survive.
<\/span>Busboy, my old job was the easiest one to find,
<\/span>A seafood restaurant located nearby so I went there to apply.<\/span><\/p>\n

After my classes were over,
<\/span><\/span>I changed my clothes, drove my butt to work.
<\/span>Life went on like water under the bridge,
<\/span>Classes during the day, cleaning tables at night.<\/span><\/p>\n

After my first pay working as a busboy,
<\/span><\/span>I asked Li\u00ean to go out on a date at the Pizza Hut.
<\/span>We were just like young kids on their first date,
<\/span>What else, pizza of course, cheap and tasty.<\/span><\/p>\n

She came home telling her brother,
<\/span><\/span>We had dinner together in a restaurant.
<\/span>Her brother was glad to hear,
<\/span>Nodding and motioning for us to come near.<\/span><\/p>\n

We enjoyed each other\u2019s company,
<\/span><\/span>As if we had fallen in love.
<\/span>But for some strange reason I never expected,
<\/span>She giggled at my name, saying it sounded so funny.<\/span><\/p>\n

I was hurt after hearing her say that,
<\/span><\/span>Uncomfortable, soon I bid them good night.
<\/span>The next day she called me on the dorm phone,
<\/span>We did not talk much then I heard her whispering, \u201cI love you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

I was still angry at her,
<\/span><\/span>Why had she made fun of my name Lay?
<\/span>Whoever made fun of my name,
<\/span>Although my love for her hadn’t stopped, seeing her, I would not.<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s why I remained silent,
<\/span><\/span>Not saying what she wanted to hear
<\/span>Never mind\u2026 she voiced it painfully clear;
<\/span>We knew that our love was not so dear.
