26. Coming Home<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>

My parents were old and weak.
<\/span><\/span>Half a world away dad was sick and I could not even visit
<\/span>When money sent home, dad would go for radiation treatment.
<\/span>Money was tight so mom sold charcoal by the road to buy hope.<\/span><\/p>

In 1994, my father felt weaker.
<\/span>\u201cSon, come home so I can see you.\u201d
<\/span><\/span>Money was tight \u2013 from hand to mouth at that time.
<\/span>We were frequently short on cash, my paycheck did not last.<\/span><\/p>

Each month\u2019s salary went into many things:
<\/span><\/span>Food, utilities, mortgage and car loan, nothing left.
<\/span>From time to time, I sent home money from overtime work
<\/span>To help my parents buy meat and fish.<\/span><\/p>

Vietnam and the US at that time
<\/span><\/span>Had no diplomatic relations, awaiting President Clinton\u2019s decision.
<\/span>Poor Vietnamese mixed rice with corn to make up for their diet
<\/span>While security police always tried new ways to stack their coffer.<\/span><\/p>

Short on cash for a trip home to visit my family,
<\/span><\/span>I could not ask my father to wait for me a little longer.
<\/span>Buying lottery tickets seemed a good bet
<\/span>Because if one didn’t buy lottery, one wouldn’t win.<\/span><\/p>

One day, the house next door caught fire in the early morning.
<\/span><\/span>All thirteen members in that house escaped safely.
<\/span>Fire trucks came on time to put out the fire in their kitchen.
<\/span>Neighbors whispered to each other why the house was on fire.<\/span><\/p>

My house was lightly torched by the fire,
<\/span><\/span>But the damage was compensated fairly well.
<\/span>There\u2019s a silver lining in every cloud,
<\/span>Having the money to go home, thanks to this fire.<\/span><\/p>

I hurried to take care of things before leaving,
<\/span><\/span>To come home as quickly as I could.
<\/span>Nineteen years is a very long time
<\/span>To come home to see my parents for the first time.<\/span><\/p>

When we landed at the airport,
<\/span><\/span>We should be ready to grease the airport security’s hands.
<\/span>\u201cHello money,\u201d if you wanted to check out quickly.
<\/span><\/span>If you dare, your luggage will be inspected thoroughly.<\/span><\/p>

I did not look like a typical overseas Vietnamese,
<\/span><\/span>I carried only a backpack on my shoulders,
<\/span>Wearing tennis shorts, sneakers, and a white polo shirt,
<\/span>No luggage, no nothing so I could check out first.<\/span><\/p>

One airport employee motioned me to move,
<\/span><\/span>Pointing his baton to move me to the line for diplomats.
<\/span>Not a word to him, I just moved my ass.
<\/span>Showing them my passport, they stamped, I passed.<\/span><\/p>

Then my family called me, look\u2026 there\u2019s brother five!
<\/span><\/span>I was so moved seeing them whom I had forgotten,
<\/span>Sobbing uncontrollably for what seemed a long time.
<\/span>The tears gushed out like a small stream on my face.<\/span><\/p>

Looking at their physical condition, my heart ached,
<\/span><\/span>Dark skin, skinny body, and gloomy faces.
<\/span>Unimaginable how hard their life must have been.
<\/span>Is it the trophy for the South’s liberation we rather not see?<\/span><\/p>

The tears could not stop rolling down my face.
<\/span><\/span>I cried because I was lucky to live in another country?
<\/span>Or because I\u2019ve been longing for a return to my homeland?
<\/span>Perhaps, crying was the human way to release their emotion.<\/span><\/p>

\u201cForty years living in another country
<\/span><\/span>Can’t be equal to living one month as a free Vietnamese.\u201d
