22. Working For The School District of Philadelphia<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

One day, my boss called me over.
<\/font>\u201cYou should apply for this job,\u201d she said.
<\/span><\/span>School District of Philadelphia Employment Opportunities,
<\/span>They needed a Bilingual Personnel Trainee for refugees.<\/span><\/p>\n

The next day I went to that place,
<\/span><\/span>Handed them my application with a straight face.
<\/span>The very next day they called me,
<\/span>Come in for a test they had scheduled so quickly.<\/span><\/p>\n

There were three candidates for the job,
<\/span><\/span>Two Asian Indians and one Vietnamese, me.
<\/span>The three of us took the multiple-choice exam,
<\/span>But only me who passed, \u201cLucky me,\u201d I said.<\/span><\/p>\n

It looked like they were on a deadline,
<\/span><\/span>They interviewed me on the following day.
<\/span>Three people interviewed me for half an hour,
<\/span>Then I was excused to wait outside while they were conferring.<\/span><\/p>\n

I did not know what they thought of me,
<\/span><\/span>After a while, they called me back into the room.
<\/font>\u201cWe agree to hire you on one condition:
<\/span><\/span>You must pay more attention to your pronunciation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sometimes you speak too fast,
<\/span><\/span>You swallow the vowels so it\u2019s hard to understand.
<\/span>Take your time pronouncing each syllable,
<\/span>We\u2019ll give you one week to improve.<\/span><\/p>\n

Being on training for a few weeks,
<\/span><\/span>I often heard I was doing a good job.
<\/span>Feeling much better already,
<\/span>I could say my job now looked like a Chinese pork stew pot.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now I could breathe easier,
<\/span><\/span>Knowing the boss had given me several assignments.
<\/span>There was one PC on an empty desk collecting dust,
<\/span>No one knew how the PC could manifest.<\/span><\/p>\n

For a few months, I often stayed after work,
<\/span><\/span>Tinkering with the PC so no one would be envious.
<\/span>My boss was impressed with what I learned,
<\/span>He said everyone should learn to use the PC from now on.<\/span><\/p>\n

Armed with the knowledge I had acquired,
<\/span><\/span>Everything I’d learned was quickly put into practice.
<\/span>I taught myself to use software from reading books
<\/span>PC was becoming my first hobby, I was hooked.<\/span><\/p>\n

We still used hand graded multiple-choice answer sheets,
<\/span><\/span>But now with a scanner, we had to change the way we worked.
<\/span>The boss asked me to work on an exam tracking system,
<\/span>I was delighted to respond with an office automation solution.
