20. Graduating From Penn State University<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Rice and chicken dipped in soy sauce,
<\/span><\/span>The same meal daily until graduation.
<\/span>Tomorrow was the day I had to move out,
<\/span>No gown, no ring, no diploma in hand, and penniless.<\/span><\/p>\n

The landlady stopped by to show students the apartments,
<\/span><\/span>Several future tenants were with her.
<\/span>While they were checking out the bathroom,
<\/span>The stinky odor was too much for them to ignore.<\/span><\/p>\n

Because of the toilet\u2019s sickening smell,
<\/span><\/span>The landlady quickly said, \u201cI\u2019ll take care of it.\u201d
<\/span>Overhearing the landlady’s excuses,
<\/font>\u201cGive me sixty dollars, I\u2019ll clean it for you,\u201d I pleaded.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

She turned around not believing what she heard.
<\/font>\u201cAre you serious?\u201d
<\/font>\u201cYes, I am serious,\u201d I said.
<\/span><\/span>I needed money for gas to drive back to Philly.<\/span><\/p>\n

She handed me sixty dollars,
<\/span><\/span>A cleaning bucket, bleach, and a mop.
<\/span>I was on my knees cleaning the bathroom for hours,
<\/span>Both the toilet and bathroom’s odor were gone forever.<\/span><\/p>\n

Filling my gas tank, I hurried my way back to Philadelphia.
<\/span><\/span>That night the Turnpike was dark and deserted.
<\/span>Snow was hard, chilly winds fogged the windshield.
<\/span>I crouched to see the road while keeping my foot on the gas.<\/span><\/p>\n

I still owed money to Penn State when I graduated,
<\/span><\/span>So they put a lien on my diploma.
<\/span>I explained my situation to the registrar\u2019s office earnestly,
<\/span>They firmly said, \u201cCome back with the money you owe.\u201d
