18. Transferring to Penn State University<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

In the Winter Semester of 1980, I transferred to Penn State
<\/span><\/span>As a student in a five-year co-op engineering program.
<\/span>I was allowed to live on campus,
<\/span>So cooking meals was not a problem for me.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, my second year there,
<\/span><\/span>All upperclassmen had to live off campus.
<\/span>I had to take care of my own cooking.
<\/span>No money for books and cooking meals was on my own.<\/span><\/p>\n

Selling blood plasma was common for college students.
<\/span><\/span>I checked into a clinic, seeing so many of them.
<\/span>Lying on makeshift beds with needles in their two arms,
<\/span>One drawn out blood, the other pumped blood back in.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cPlease come here to test your blood.\u201d
<\/span><\/span>She placed the huge needle on the table.
<\/span>I was so scared, I stood up,
<\/font>\u201cNo, I changed my mind,\u201d and walked out.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I hurried to a Chinese restaurant nearby,
<\/span><\/span>Asked if they had need for a dish washer.
<\/span>I\u2019d rather wash dishes than sell blood plasma.
<\/span>If I wasn\u2019t careful, I might become a laughing corpse.<\/span><\/p>\n

My school grades dropped dangerously low
<\/span><\/span>For I had to work late into the night.
<\/span>My life was so miserable and horrifying,
<\/span>Hanging in there was the only way to survive.<\/span><\/p>\n

No matter what, I must graduate.
<\/span><\/span>Many times weeping in bed all night long.
<\/span>Oh God, how insane my life had become,
<\/span>No money for books, not enough money for food.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nothing was left in my room,
<\/span><\/span>I had already sold everything I owned.
<\/span>My watch, my camera gone long ago,
<\/font>\u201cFive bucks for an old window fan.\u201d I begged my friend.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

After that, my Malibu car was the only thing left,
<\/span><\/span>I had to keep it for transportation’s sake.
<\/span>That summer I drove back to Philly,
<\/span>I found a waiter job in a Chinese Restaurant in Upper Darby.
