15. Summer School at St. Vincent College<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The U.S. government had a plan to help students.
<\/span><\/span>Those who dropped out of school for whatever reason.
<\/span>Must satisfy this simple condition:
<\/span>Passing two remedial courses in the summer school.<\/span><\/p>\n

The GED exam I passed recently
<\/span><\/span>Was required for my admission.
<\/span>Saint Vincent College in Latrobe had this program.
<\/span>Dr. Ronald Tranquilla was the head of their English Department.<\/span><\/p>\n

Summer of 1977, I entered college at St. Vincent.
<\/span><\/span>I felt good about English and Math courses.
<\/span>I got an A in Math and a B in English
<\/span>Which I was more than happy to receive.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the Fall semester of 1977, I started full time
<\/span><\/span>But my English was still very shaky.
<\/span>Those students like me, mostly Vietnamese
<\/span>Who needed to take an enrichment course called ESL class.<\/span><\/p>\n

There were six Vietnamese students,
<\/span><\/span>Three males and three females attending two different colleges.
<\/span>For male students: Nam, H\u00f9ng, and I were from St. Vincent.
<\/span>Two other female students and V\u00e2n were from Seton Hill College.<\/span><\/p>\n

I was way above a college student age,
<\/span><\/span>The rest were between nineteen to twenty-one.
<\/span>It\u2019s fun to hang out with Vietnamese students,
<\/span>Whenever we had a chance, we went out on weekends.<\/span><\/p>\n

There were few Vietnamese families in the area
<\/span><\/span>We often got together drinking and singing in the weekends.
<\/span>The Pittsburgh Steelers were our football team,
<\/span>They had training camp at St. Vincent College every summer.<\/span><\/p>\n

Whenever they played during regular season,
<\/span><\/span>We would bring down the house with our screaming.
<\/span>Notably, brother \u0110\u1ea1m and brother H\u00f9ng
<\/span>They were older and so were their mouths, always louder.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gradually, one by one, they all moved away.
<\/span><\/span>Brothers Hu\u1ec7, \u0110\u1ea1m, H\u00f9ng, and V\u00e2n from Seton Hill College
<\/span>The weather here was colder and Vietnamese were fewer,
<\/span>So California was always the reason for their relocation.
