10. Learning to Drive<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>

I needed a car after moving in with the DePhillips,
<\/span><\/span>So I applied for a learner\u2019s permit.
<\/span>My adoptive Mom taught me how to drive,
<\/span>Rural roads were always good places to try.<\/span><\/p>

The first time I took the driving test,
<\/span><\/span>I bumped the front wheels into the parking barrier.
<\/span>The trooper\u2019s face said it all,
<\/span>\u201cBetter luck next time,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

After getting my driver\u2019s license,
<\/span><\/span>I wanted to buy a car but had no money.
<\/span>Jim had a blue Chevy Malibu,
<\/span>Rarely used, so Jim said, \u201cLay, it’s a good car for you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

One thousand dollars, do you want to buy?
<\/span><\/span>It was a lot of money, wishing against wish.
<\/span>Stella, a very kind waitress, offered to help.
<\/span>\u201cI\u2019ll lend you the money without interest,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

It\u2019s the first car of my life.
<\/span><\/span>Just last October, I was a refugee, and now I had a car.
<\/span>Having a car made me feel like American.
<\/span>It was the first milestone in my American Dream.<\/span><\/p>

One day Jim said to me:
<\/span>\u201cLay, I need you to work the Smorgasbords
<\/span><\/span>Roast beef and baked ham on each side,
<\/span>You carve the meat when customers ask you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

\u201cWhat would you like, Sir?
<\/span><\/span>The man said, \u201cA slice of ham, please\u201d
<\/span>\u201cI\u2019d also like your roast beef,\u201d he said.
<\/span>\u201cGive me a rare cut and some bloody juice too.\u201d
