08. The Time Working at Oakhurst Tea Room<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>

Today we make banana fries and onion rings,
<\/span>\u201cDebbie! show Lay how to make it.\u201d
<\/span><\/span>She giggled a lot while she was cutting the banana.
<\/span>\u201cMix with waffle batter, then fry them until they’re brown.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u201cCut those big onions like this
<\/span><\/span>Slice them straight down about this thick.
<\/span>Use only the big round ones
<\/span>Mix with the waffle batter, then fry them round like a ring.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

There were fried foods tonight
<\/span><\/span>Eye-pleasing onion rings and banana fries.
<\/span>They were hot, crunchy, and tasty,
<\/span>Everybody liked it, saying they were so yummy.<\/span><\/p>

After I knew how to make the banana fries in the kitchen,
<\/span><\/span>Jim said it’s time for Lay to work as a busboy.
<\/span>Because I looked nice and clean,
<\/span>They let me work in the dining area, not fearing a thing.<\/span><\/p>

Before that, I often peeked into the dining area,
<\/span><\/span>Seeing customers in their fancy outfits,
<\/span>Wishing that, \u201cWhen would Jim let me work outside?
<\/span>That was how I needed an opportunity to shine.<\/span><\/p>

The busboy\u2019s duties were clearly stated:
<\/span><\/span>Each boy was responsible for several tables.
<\/span>When guests got up for the smorgasbord,
<\/span>Busboys quickly grabbed their empty plates.<\/span><\/p>

I liked to stay busy at all times.
<\/span><\/span>If I wanted to impress them, I must put in the time.
<\/span>They all liked me by the impression I could see
<\/span>Because they knew how good a busboy I could be.<\/span><\/p>

Fred and Jean were also fond of me,
<\/span><\/span>Often asking me to come along in their shopping.
<\/span>Their car was a huge Continental Mark IV,
<\/span>I still remember the first time I rode in that luxury car.<\/span><\/p>

Fred opened the back door for me,
<\/span><\/span>The leather-covered backseat gave me a nice feeling.
<\/span>Today they\u2019d take me shopping in Pittsburgh
<\/span>To buy new clothes that I really needed.<\/span><\/p>

The minimum hourly wage at that time was $1.90 an hour,
<\/span><\/span>But Jean paid me $2.00 an hour, told me not to tell the others.
<\/span>The Tea Room opened six days a week.
<\/span>Monday was closed – a day off we all needed.
