Leaving Indiantown Gap<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">October 2, 1975 &#8212; a date I will never forget.<br \/><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">It&#8217;s because I was in the last batch of refugees.<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">The American Red Cross lady met me at the bus stop;<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">She was the one who found me the busboy job.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The Greyhound bus was here at the Gap.<br \/><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">Waving goodbye to her as I got on the bus,<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">I tucked in the seat by the window, holding on to my bag.<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">No matter where it went, as long as I got to Somerset.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I had only a plastic bag with me:<br \/><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">Two old books and paperwork, and the clothes on my body.<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;\">The lady kept reminding me:<br \/><\/span>\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Hold on to the folder\u201d that had my sponsor\u2019s information.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Late that afternoon, the bus arrived in Somerset;<br \/><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">It looked like my sponsor waiting for me in the car.<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">As I was getting off the bus<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">The minister walked over asking, \u201cAre you Lay Van Huynh?\u201d<\/span><\/p><p>\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I\u2019m Pastor Jim Meyers.<br \/><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">This is my wife, Mary.<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;\">Welcome to Somerset.\u201d<br \/><\/span>\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I\u2019m happy to be here,\u201d I said<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I followed them to their car,<br \/><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">To go to the Oakhurst Tea Room, not too far, they said.<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">Wow! This place was huge,<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">So fancy it made me both apprehensive and thrilled.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I saw two people walking toward us,<br \/><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">They shook hands with Pastor Jim and his wife Mary first.<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">Then turned to welcome me with a handshake:<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">His name was Fred, and she Jean. Spangler was their last.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">After greetings and exchanging pleasantries<br \/><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">Pastor Jim and his wife were already in the line.<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">Seeing me still standing there grinning,<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">He came over and told me to get in line.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I saw people pick up their plates,<br \/><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">A plate in one hand, the other picking up food.<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">The buffet filled with delicious items ready for a feast,<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">People all had their plates \u2013 some were full of meat.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Though I was scared, looking so clumsy,<br \/><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">I was hungry but I yielded to everyone humbly.<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">There was chicken, baked ham, steamy hot roast beef,<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">I only filled my plate a tiny amount, but inside I wanted plenty.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">What a pathetic refugee like me acting like a gentleman,<br \/><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">Starving to death but acting like a high-class guest.<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">People returned to the buffet back to back,<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">Following my sponsor, I came back for a third.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">But later that night, I was still hungry, like a starving ghost,<br \/><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">In my motel room, my stomach grumbling what a fool I was.<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">I had to drink water from the sink,<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">To soothe myself into sleep for the job tomorrow morning.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I stayed in a motel across the road from the restaurant,<br \/><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">The room was rather small, good enough for overnight stay.<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">A queen-size bed taking up the entire room,<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">Next to it was a shower stall, sink, and toilet.<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">###<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>06.
