05. Arriving at Indiantown Gap<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>

These barracks belong to the Pennsylvania National Guard.
<\/span><\/span>They were used for Vietnamese refugees’ resettlement.
<\/span>All the barracks look identical, row after row.
<\/span>Without numbers we couldn’t tell one from the other.<\/span><\/p>

The toilets and a shower stall were only on the first floor,
<\/span><\/span>Located conveniently by the road side and near the doors.
<\/span>All the barrack entrances faced the same direction,
<\/span>And the outside stairways were connected to the second floor.<\/span><\/p>

Toilets and washing area were always open
<\/span><\/span>While their only communal shower stall was rotated by the hours.
<\/span>People had to follow the posted schedule for shower time;
<\/span>Hours for men and women posted right on the wall.<\/span><\/p>

The shower schedules were rotated hourly based on gender.
<\/span><\/span>People washing and showering late into the night.
<\/span>The public washing area was always packed
<\/span>Where new friends and neighbors amicably chatted.<\/span><\/p>

Our refugee life had returned to normal,
<\/span><\/span>People had beds to rest at any hour.
<\/span>The barrack had become our new home;
<\/span>Children played and laughed until their bedtime.<\/span><\/p>

Like the time we were on Guam,
<\/span><\/span>Three times a day we were in lines for meals.
<\/span>The loudest group was always the rowdy young men,
<\/span>Friends chatting while girls and boys glanced at each other.<\/span><\/p>

Like returned like while eyes searched for eyes.
<\/span><\/span>Young, old, boys, girls let their attraction known.
<\/span>Hey, the one with the rosy cheeks,
<\/span>\u201cAre you married?\u201d I flirted.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u201cI\u2019m married but it\u2019s like I\u2019m not.
<\/span><\/span>My husband loves drinking and isn\u2019t yet home.
<\/span>My two small children cling to me from dawn to dusk,
<\/span>My mother-in-law is watching me, daring you to flirt.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

Because I was able to speak some English,
<\/span><\/span>I could communicate with Americans fairly well.
<\/span>Being a single man, no family, and no girlfriend to date,
<\/span>I volunteered to be an interpreter, freshly made.<\/span><\/p>

After just one week the Lieutenant told me
<\/span><\/span>To move into the office so I can find you.
<\/span>Whenever I need you for translation,
<\/span>Otherwise, you will be the mailman for our station.<\/span><\/p>

As mornings came and nights went,
<\/span><\/span>Four months had passed and tens of thousands had left.
<\/span>Single people needed not worry too much;
<\/span>Three meals a day and free movies were such a good time.<\/span><\/p>

Families with children must have worried.
<\/span><\/span>They would be processed with top priority.
<\/span>Single young people were the least concerned;
<\/span>Their time to leave would be on their own terms.<\/span><\/p>

Chilly winds signaled the arrival of Fall,
<\/span><\/span>The sun went to bed early knowing the summer was over.
<\/span>Frosty morning dew appeared on the grassy fields,
<\/span>I wandered wherever the road I could feel.<\/span><\/p>

Americans brought in bags and bags of used clothes,
<\/span><\/span>Winter jackets and sweaters left outside by the barracks.
<\/span>Mostly mothers were there, and clothes were too big,
<\/span>Sister \u201cH\u1eb1ng\u201d was kind picking for me a sweater that fit.<\/span><\/p>

I had been thinking about finding a job.
<\/span><\/span>Should I take the one suggested during the job interview.
<\/span>Busboy was the job they had found for me,
<\/span>But I never worked as a boy on a passenger bus.<\/span><\/p>

Busboy was not working on a passenger bus,
<\/span><\/span>But clearing dirty plates from the tables in a restaurant.
<\/span>After the customers went back to the line,
<\/span>You promptly clear the dirty plates off the tables assigned.<\/span><\/p>

This is a restaurant job,
<\/span><\/span>Meals are self-served buffet style.
<\/span>Customers eat as much as they will
<\/span>Until their stomach is filled, then pay the bill.<\/span><\/p>

I accepted the job with no further thought
<\/span><\/span>Because I did not have to worry about meals.
<\/span>The week after I accepted the busboy job,
<\/span>The minister needed a picture of me for their file.<\/span><\/p>

I guessed they also wanted to see what I looked like,
<\/span><\/span>Were my limbs, my eyes, my mouth, my teeth fine?
<\/span>It felt somehow troublesome,
<\/span>I looked fine but still, it was somewhat worrisome.<\/span><\/p>

I had to dress nicely for picture day.
<\/span><\/span>Nice pants, nice old sweatshirt, and shoes on my feet.
<\/span>When they saw me, they said,
<\/span>\u201cYou look very nice today, indeed.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>

The week after my picture was taken,
<\/span><\/span>They said they would take me, no problem.
<\/span>The minister called asking for me,
<\/span>\u201cHow do you know Somerset?\u201d, he asked.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u201cI do not know where Somerset is\u201d
<\/span><\/span>My case was handled by an American Red Cross lady.
<\/span>The lady said she knew this place.
<\/span>Oakhurst Tea Room had already sealed my fate.
