The Night We Left Saigon<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">For 40 years, I\u2019ve longed for a homecoming<br \/><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">To live in Vietnam for my life&#8217;s remaining years.<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">My hair is fading like the morning dew\u2019s fate,<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">But life is still full of challenges I must face.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">1975 was the year I fled my country<br \/><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">As a single young sailor of 25, he was me.<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">Forty years later, now you know my age.<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">My life now is like an old silkworm\u2019s fate.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">On the night of April 29th, 1975,<br \/><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">We sneaked out of Saigon a few hours before midnight.<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">The Bach Dang Navy Headquarters were never in the dark,<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">HQ-11 quietly pulled up her anchor, ready to depart.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">People stood still, glued to their weary eyes.<br \/><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">To the flag of South Vietnam still unknowingly waving high.<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">The crew worked frantically<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">Hoping to reach the freedom shore safely.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The navigational crew focused on their task.<br \/><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">While Captain San made sure the ship steered safely.<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">She glided by, hugging the waves in darkness<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">As Bach Dang River was meandering to meet its ocean kin.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">We reached V\u0169ng T\u00e0u by daybreak on April 30, 1975.<br \/><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">A thick air of suspension suffocates our fear.<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">Standing by the radio for the inevitable news:<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">Saigon&#8217;s surrender was our biggest fear.<\/span><\/p><p>\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I\u2019m President D\u01b0\u01a1ng V\u0103n Minh<br \/><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">Calling all soldiers of the Republic of South Vietnam<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">To lay down your weapons for the sake of peace<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">For Saigon has been seized by the North Vietnamese.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">It\u2019s over! All my hopes and dreams.<br \/><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">What was left of my five years of service?<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">Only my dog tag still hung on my neck.<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">And the soiled Navy uniform that begged to be shed.<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">###<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>01.
